Introducing the Seminary Scholars Program at Phillips Theological Seminary: A Holistic Approach to Theological Education
by Devaunjue “Jay” Williams, Program Coordinator for Admissions & Recruitment
At Phillips Theological Seminary, we are deeply committed to not only educating future leaders in ministry but also supporting the growth of these individuals in every facet of their lives. Our newly launched Seminary Scholars Program embodies this commitment, offering a comprehensive support system for students who wish to grow in Community Formation, Spiritual Formation, and Professional/Academic Formation. Through this program, we aim to provide a nurturing and empowering environment that allows scholars to thrive in all areas of their journey—intellectual, spiritual, and relational.
A Holistic Approach to Seminary Education
Theological education is about much more than the transfer of knowledge—it’s about transforming lives. Our Seminary Scholars program takes a holistic approach to the educational experience by addressing the academic, spiritual, and communal needs of our students. We understand that the pursuit of a theological education is not only an intellectual endeavor, but also a deep spiritual journey and a transformative personal experience. Therefore, we’ve created this program to meet scholars where they are and provide them with the support they need to succeed, grow, and become effective leaders in their communities.
Commitment 1: Community Formation
At Phillips, we believe that education doesn’t take place in isolation. It’s a relational and communal process, and we are committed to fostering a robust and vibrant community where students feel connected, supported, and empowered. Our Seminary Scholars will be part of a close-knit network of like-minded individuals who share a passion for theological exploration and social transformation.
Through regular events, workshops, and group discussions, our students will engage with faculty, companion scholars, and local leaders. The relationships and networks built during this time will be crucial not only for personal support, but also for future collaboration in ministry and social engagement. Students will be encouraged to cultivate deep relationships with one another, providing a foundation of trust and mutual growth that will serve them well throughout their careers.
We recognize the importance of community—both within the seminary and beyond—and aim to create a space where our students can learn from each other’s experiences and work together for the common good. Our commitment to community formation extends beyond academic spaces, providing opportunities for students to serve together in local initiatives, engage in interfaith dialogue, and participate in outreach programs that create positive change.
Commitment 2: Spiritual Formation
For many students, theological education is as much about spiritual growth as it is about intellectual development. The Seminary Scholars Program takes this into account by placing a strong emphasis on Spiritual Formation. We believe that deepening one’s relationship with God, self, and others is essential to preparing future leaders in ministry.
Spiritual formation is not just something that happens during chapel services or spiritual retreats. It is a continual process that influences every part of life. Through personalized spiritual guidance, retreats, prayer groups, and other spiritual practices, we help our Seminary Scholars discern their calling and deepen their faith with The Holy. We also support students in cultivating their own spiritual practices, equipping them with the tools they need to sustain their spiritual lives throughout their ministries.
As scholars continue their education, they will have opportunities to participate in spiritual formation programs designed to strengthen their spiritual resilience and sense of vocation. In addition, our faculty and staff serve as spiritual mentors and companions, offering personalized support and guidance throughout each student’s journey. By the time our Seminary Scholars graduate, they will have developed a strong spiritual foundation to carry into their ministry vocations, able to shepherd others with wisdom, compassion, and authenticity.
Commitment 3: Professional and Academic Formation
The heart of Phillips Theological Seminary lies in its academic rigor and commitment to cultivating scholarly leaders. Our Seminary Scholars program places equal emphasis on Professional and Academic Formation, ensuring that students are not only equipped for theological reflection but also prepared for professional ministry and leadership in diverse contexts.
Students in the Seminary Scholars program will have access to a variety of resources to support their academic success, including individualized academic advising, mentorship from experienced faculty, and opportunities for advanced research and writing. This academic support is complemented by hands-on professional formation experiences such as internships, field placements, and mentorship from practitioners in ministry, nonprofit work, and social justice.
This commitment is about helping students integrate their academic knowledge with practical experience. Through these opportunities, students will develop skills and insights they can apply directly in their ministry settings. Whether students are preparing for parish ministry, chaplaincy, teaching, or social justice work, we are committed to providing them with the tools and training they need to excel in their chosen vocations.
Generous Financial Support: Alleviating the Burden
A significant barrier to theological education is the financial strain many students face. At Phillips, we believe that the best minds should not be held back by financial limitations. As part of our Seminary Scholars program, we offer substantial financial support that helps alleviate the burden of tuition, fees, and living expenses, allowing students to focus on their studies and spiritual development without the constant stress of financial worry.
By providing 100% tuition assistance and a $21,000 annual living stipend, we ensure that our scholars can pursue their education with peace of mind. This financial support reflects our commitment to making theological education accessible and equitable to all students, regardless of their financial background.
A Work in Progress: Join Us in Shaping the Future
We are incredibly excited about the Seminary Scholars program and the opportunities it will provide for future students, but we are also in the building stages of this transformative initiative. As we work to shape and refine the program, we invite potential applicants—especially those who are passionate about ministry and social change—to join us in this important work.
Together, we can build a program that serves as a model for theological education that is not only academically rigorous, but also spiritually nurturing and community focused. Our hope is that the Seminary Scholars program will enrich the lives of scholars for generations to come, helping them grow into effective, compassionate leaders who will make a lasting impact in their local communities and the world writ large.
