Soren Hessler Joins Phillips as Associate Dean
Phillips Theological Seminary welcomes the Rev. Dr. Soren M. Hessler as the new Associate Dean of Academic and Student Affairs and Affiliate Assistant Professor of Practical Theology and Interreligious Studies. Hessler will officially join the Phillips community August 15.
In his role, Hessler will help the seminary to synthesize the work of academic and student affairs across the institution.
“As one who is dedicated to scholarship, Soren will also model for our students the importance of integrating research and the practice of ministry as an expression of faithfulness to the call,” said the Rev. Dr. Lee H. Butler, Jr., Vice President of Academic Affairs and Dean.
Hessler received a PhD in Practical Theology with a concentration in leadership and administration from Boston University. He also holds EdM, MDiv, MA and BA degrees from the school. While there, he also served as a member of Marsh Chapel’s ministry staff for nine years.
“My deep passion is in helping churches and theological schools to refine their administrative systems and better develop the infrastructure to support and grow the good work they are already doing. I am excited to share that passion with the Phillips community,” Hessler said.
He comes to Phillips from Huron University College Faculty of Theology in London, Ontario, where he serves as Assistant Professor and Coordinator of Academic and Enrollment Services. Hessler is Instructor of Christian and Interreligious Studies at Hebrew College in Newton Centre, MA, and is an advisory board member of the Journal of Interreligious Studies. Prior to his work at Huron University College, he was Director of Graduate Academic Services at Drew University in Madison, NJ.
Hessler is also an elder in full connection in the West Ohio Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church.
