Dennis Smith Festschrift Now in Seminary Library

The Phillips Theological Seminary library has received its copy of the Festschrift in honor of Dennis Smith, professor of New Testament emeritus.

The collection of writings, Stones, Bones, and the Sacred: Essays on Material Culture and Ancient Religion in Honor of Dennis E. Smith, was published by SBL Press, the publisher for the Society of Biblical Literature.

When Smith first heard of this honor, he said his colleagues’ action “surprised and dumbfounded” him.

The SBL calls the book, “A crucial text for any university course on the interaction of archaeology and the Bible.”

There are 13 essays in the book with a response from Smith. The book contains “examples of method in the utilization of ancient material culture for biblical interpretation,” according to SBL.

The description of the book says the writers, “offer these essays in honor of one who has made a lifetime's work in mining ancient material culture to extract nuggets of insight into early Christian dining practices—Dennis E. Smith.”

Smith joined Phillips in 1986, retiring as the LaDonna Kramer Meinders Professor of New Testament Emeritus in 2015.
