Phillips Theological Seminary Receives Five-Star Diversity and Inclusion Honor

The Tulsa Regional Chamber’s diversity business council, Mosaic, has honored Phillips Theological Seminary with its highest rating as an employer with an inclusive workplace culture.

Seminary President Gary Peluso-Verdend and Human Resources Manager Gwen Derrick accepted the Five Star award on behalf of the school at an awards breakfast Oct. 25 in Tulsa, Okla.

“Last year we were honored to receive rising star recognition,” Peluso-Verdend said. “We took extra time this year to closely examine our policies and procedures to demonstrate our commitment to having a diverse and inclusive institution.”

Other Five Star honorees include companies such as American Airlines, Macy’s, Verizon, ONEOK and Bama Companies, Inc.

The seminary, led by its Board of Trustees, views its work for diversity and inclusion as an extension of the theological belief "that the Reign of God as announced by Jesus Christ is open to all people regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, age, physical ability, sexual orientation, or socioeconomic class."

The seminary has been a part of Mosaic for several years. Kurt Gwartney, senior director of seminary relations, is joining the organization’s leadership team as the incoming legislative committee chair.
