Phillips Theological Seminary to Assume Operations of Mid-America Center for Ministry

The governing bodies of Phillips Theological Seminary and the Mid-America Center for Ministry have approved a plan for the seminary to assume operations of the center’s ministry beginning Jan. 1, 2018.

The center has provided a steady educational training program for Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) commissioned and licensed ministers in Missouri and beyond for more than 120 years. In addition, several other denominations have used the center’s ministry, as have laypersons.

Phillips will become the successor organization and continue to offer the Certificate of Pastoral Ministry courses.

"Phillips cares about the education for the whole church, not only those persons who are eligible for graduate education," said Gary Peluso-Verdend, president of Phillips Theological Seminary. “Assuming the center’s ministry will enable the seminary to expand our educational offerings to another circle of persons who need quality ministry training.”

In 2016, the board for the Mid-America Center for Ministry, formerly the Missouri School of Religion and originally organized as the Bible College of Missouri, voted to approve the closing of the organization.

"When our board decided to cease operations, we were hopeful that our commitment to training ministers across the heartland would continue," said Leslie Robb LeSieur, executive director of the Mid-America Center for Ministry. "We are so very excited that Phillips is taking on this vital ministry for the church."

Peluso-Verdend has already had conversations with most of the faculty members from the center.

"The center has a long history of utilizing quality instructors," he said. "We're looking forward to working with many of those persons and augmenting the instructor pool with the seminary’s regular faculty."

Phillips plans to announce additional details about the plan at the 2017 General Assembly in Indianapolis.
