Wine for Water to benefit JustHope

JustHope, a non-profit founded by Phillips Theological Seminary alumna Leslie Penrose, will host its seventh annual Wine for Water fundraising event at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 9, at the Greenwood Cultural Center in Tulsa.

Dr. Mindy McGarrah Sharp, Assistant Professor of Pastoral Theology and Ethics at Phillips and board member for JustHope, says the event helps provide a deeper understanding of the non-profit’s work in Nicaragua.

“JustHope believes there’s not hope without justice,” she said. “This event helps tell the story of all the different small but important ways the organization works for justice.”

The Wine for Water event will feature a wine tasting, live music, handmade Nicaraguan pottery and an auction. Proceeds from past events have resulted in access to education, clean water for 11,000 people, new businesses and $35,000 in micro-credit loans. McGarrah Sharp, who has been a board member since 2012, said the micro-loan program has a 100 percent repayment rate.

JustHope works to combat extreme poverty and encourage long-term sustainable partnerships.  The organization focuses on access to water, school students, women's business and farming in addition to hosting both service learning and faith-based immersion experiences. McGarrah Sharp recently took a Doctor of Ministry class to Nicaragua to learn about women’s leadership in an impoverished community.

“The world is a really messy place. If we stay in the classroom, we only have one kind of access to the world,” Sharp said of the trip. “There’s no way to grasp the story of Nicaragua without going there.”

Tickets for Wine for Water can be purchased for $65 at JustHope.org.
