The Journey to Ordination

I have had the privilege in recent months to participate in two ordination services of PTS graduates, those of Jerry Scribner and Victoria Fishel.

Jerry is UCC and his ordination was at the church in Newton, KS where he serves. What a joy to share in the experience of this 70 year old, wise man and storyteller kneeling while hands were laid upon him affirming his call to ministry. He took early retirement from the chemical industry 12 years ago and began a long journey through seminary and church procedures to that day. The Newton congregation threw a grand celebration and their hospitality is encouraging.

Victoria, who is DOC, was ordained at Community Christian in Ponca City, where she serves on Sundays, along with another PTS grad, Mark Lyon. She is also a full time chaplain with Grace Hospice in Tulsa. Though much younger than Jerry, Victoria had her own lengthy journey to that evening (as many of us do) and the spirit of affirmation for her call was enlivening. Sponsoring ordinations is a healing and uplifting experience for any congregation and from overhearing conversations around me at the great reception, it is no less true for this one.

Victoria and Jerry both trekked through Ireland with Barney and me when we took a PTS-related group for a 12 day spiritual journey in 2006. It was a deep joy and privilege for me to participate in these services, and I am grateful for each of them and their ministries.
