Seminary President to Preach at Boston Avenue UMC

President Gary Peluso-VerdendDr. Gary Peluso-Verdend, the President of Phillips Theological Seminary, will be preaching at Boston Avenue United Methodist Church on Sunday, Oct. 5, at 8:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. The 11 a.m. service will be broadcast on Tulsa’s Channel 8.

Peluso-Verdend says he is delighted by the invitation to preach at Boston Avenue, located at 1301 S. Boston in downtown Tulsa. He says Boston Avenue has a prominent pulpit in Methodism.

“I’m both honored and humbled,” he said. “The invitation came as a pleasant surprise.”

During his sermon, Peluso-Verdend plans to emphasize the value of adult education for all people, not just clergy, in reference to the command to “be transformed by the renewing of your mind” found in Romans 12:1-3.

“For way too many people who populate our pews, their Christian education ended in junior high,” he said. “That education is not enough to address the issues they face in life from an informed faith perspective.”

Peluso-Verdend, who believes education is a part of Methodist heritage, will be preaching during World Communion Sunday, an annual Methodist event that helps raise money for scholarships for national and international graduate students. He says Methodists have historically considered science and history to be friends, not enemies, of faith.

“United Methodists probably have established more colleges and universities than any other denomination,” he said.

Boston Avenue and Phillips have a “rich relationship” that spans several years, according to Peluso-Verdend. Phillips has had both donors and trustees from Boston Avenue, and Phillips faculty teach Sunday school classes at Boston Avenue approximately 25 times a year.
