Real Faith

“Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.” Hebrews 11:1 (NRSV)

When you are ready to:

  • Give up the pieties masking your pain and fear of death             or blinding you from your neighbor’s pain
  • Relinquish believing your moral point of view is either the point of view everyone should hold                                                             or that your morals align perfectly with God
  • Abandon the confidence that any saying, book, person, feeling, or point of view is                                                                                     infallible
  • Surrender the assumption that your interpretation is obviously the best interpretation
  • Allow yourself to feel the hole at the core of your spirit that is filled with a human relationship, an idea, a bottle, a drug, or a behavior—that space where only God properly belongs
  • Douse the fires of hell and the pleasures of heaven to love God for God’s sake alone (with a nod of thanks to Bernard of Clairvaux)
  • Seek first to change yourself, before insisting that others change
  • Believe in more than you can see
  • Surrender control, and surrender the fantasy of control
  • Stop saying “Why me?”

Then you are ready for real faith in God,

The kind that moves mountains,

The kind that changes lives.

I pray that, someday, I am ready for real faith.
