Phillips to March in MLK Parade

On Monday, Jan. 19, Phillips Theological Seminary will close in observance of the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday. Several students, staff and faculty will march in Tulsa's annual MLK parade, which is one of the largest in the country.

The seminary has had a presence in the parade for about 15 years, according to Vice President of Academic Affairs and Dean Nancy Pittman. She says people from all areas of Tulsa brave the January weather to remember King’s legacy.

“We come and join in remembering Dr. King’s contributions and celebrate our progress toward his dream of a nation undivided by race, a people who offer equal access to justice and opportunity, and a community that works for the good of all its citizens,” she said.

Pittman said the parade celebrates the possibilities for diversity both in the Tulsa community and in the nation. She believes participating in the parade reflects the mission and values of the seminary.

“Here at Phillips we are committed to fighting racism and opening all avenues of church and society to everyone regardless of race, ethnicity, sex, sexual orientation, physical ability or socioeconomic class,” she said. “Participation in the parade is one very visible way to demonstrate this commitment to the greater Tulsa public.”
