Phillips Trustee Special Appointment

Phillips Theological Seminary Board of Trustees member, Jari Askins, was recently named as special adviser to the governor on child welfare and Pinnacle Plan implementation.

The Pinnacle Plan is the Oklahoma Department of Human Services’ effort to reform the state’s child welfare operations. The plan arose from the settlement of a federal class action lawsuit that said these operations were a danger to children.

“There is no one more qualified to ensure that we are placing Oklahoma children in safe and loving environments,” Oklahoma governor Mary Fallin said.

Askins will manage child welfare services and relevant staff members at the department.

“She is being asked to oversee one of the most important, difficult tasks in state government in one of our largest agencies,” said Alex Weintz, the governor’s spokesman.

Askins served as interim executive director of the state Pardon and Parole Board. Her seven-month tenure ended with the recent appointment of a new executive director.

A native of Duncan, Askins served as Oklahoma’s 15th lieutenant governor from 2007-2011. She passed up seeking re-election to run as Democratic candidate for governor in 2010.

DHS Director Ed Lake expressed appreciation for the appointment.

“We are excited about Jari Askins joining our team and the timing is excellent,” he said. “Over the past six months we have gained momentum in several key areas of the Pinnacle Plan. We want to seize this opportunity to continue to build upon that progress.”

Askins has been a Phillips Trustee since 2011. Her current term as Trustee continues through 2017.
