On the Side of Love

PTS Faculty, Students & Alums Stand on the Side of Love at All Souls Engagement Party

On Wednesday, my spouse, Lisa, and I attended a press conference showing support for marriage equality at the Same Gender Engagement Party held at All Souls Unitarian Church. I went to support the event and be one of the crowd showing others that there are many in Oklahoma ready for marriage equality. What I didn't expect was the reaction I felt immediately in my gut when members of the clergy walked down the aisle in the sanctuary at the beginning of the ceremony and lined the chancel area, twenty-seven of them, wearing clerical collars or stoles in a visible sign of their connection to a faith tradition. The gut reaction came from seeing many of my good friends and former colleagues from PTS there, some at risk for admonishment from denominational officials. Faculty, staff, students and alums of PTS took that step to stand with us and show that it is time for justice. There are no words to describe what that meant to me. There wasn't one of them whose support of mine and Lisa's relationship was ever under question, but their visible advocacy and support in a highly televised, well-attended event specifically focused on marriage equality gave me a deep sense of the importance of standing with others in solidarity waiting for justice to come.

Thanks, Susanna, Richard, Amy, Ron, Christy, Cathey, Chris, Kelli, Randy, Todd, Melinda and Debra for your visible act of justice. You give me hope and make me so proud that I had the privilege of working with you. It is not easy work, but the kind of preparation that leads religious leaders to take such action is important work. Thanks, all at PTS, for what you do.
