O God of Second Chances

            Fifth Sunday of Easter

O God of second chances,

we thank you for the severe mercy

brought to our souls

when, convicted of our own falling short of the mark,

we seek out forgiveness,

speaking the sin we have committed

For the Spirit's persistent ministry among us,

chastening until we respond to the call to repentance,

and for the miraculous possibility of

turning around,

trying again,

we are amazed

And we are hopeful

that if we can,

with the conviction of the Spirit,

speak out our sins and walk away from them,

nations can, too;

that if we

are able to seek forgiveness of one another

and speak to the ones against whom we have sinned,

naming our sins against them,

nations can, too.

For in this season of Easter,

we remember that ashes we were

and to ashes we will return again.

We are reminded of the forgiveness granted

the prodigal child and arrogant older brother,

hoping that such grace will be ours

We would like the faith of a mustard seed,

so as to move mountains,

but as today simply for the faith to go

to those who suffer in heart or mind,

the faith to be like the Marys at the foot of the cross,

providing compassionate presence for those who suffer.

We pray for the tenacity and tenderness

to search out the hidden hurt in one another

like the woman searching for her lost coin

For we live in a broken hearted world, God,

and we live for the fulfillment of your promise

that you will bind up the hurt of your people

On this morning,

we thank you for your fulfilled promise among us,

Jesus the Christ,

sent to the brokenhearted,
