God, for Today

Rather than worrying about the future, we seek God's assistance just for today in this prayer by Jen Bluestein.

GOD, FOR TODAY

Merciful God, our refuge and strength,

Like Mary's sister, Martha, we are often distracted by the many preparations that are before us

We spend hours reading, preparing lessons, and writing papers,

We plan and over plan our futures

only to find that in preparing for ministry

we become frustrated with those around us.

God, for today,

Instill in us the ability to appreciate those in our lives who help us to focus.

Give us tender hearts to care for others

and tough minds to wrestle with your Word.

Encourage those of us who search for our true vocation and ministry

                        so in all our efforts

we might find that place where we can serve your people with enthusiasm.

God, for today,

Inspire us to strive for peace and justice.

Awaken in us a sense of wonder for the earth and all that is in it

so we may become instruments of your peace

and tear down the walls of sin and hostility.

God, for today,

Comfort and relieve all who are in trouble... sorrow...poverty...sickness...grief...

especially those known to us, whom we name before you in silence...

            Hear our prayers, O God,

Lay your healing hand on each broken body, troubled mind,

                                    or wounded circumstance.

By your grace, startle us to your wonders

beyond all that each of us may dream or hope.

Into your hands, O God, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in your mercy;

And now, in our letting go, God, open our hearts and minds, that as the scriptures are read and your Word is proclaimed, we may hear with joy what you say to us today.

Amen.
