Full of Desire and Longing

We express our deep longing for Christ and all that Christ brings in this prayer by Kay Northcutt.

            Fourth Sunday of Advent

O Holy One, you struck the rock in the desert

and brought forth streams of water.

We come before you

an Advent people,

full of desire and longing

for the One who has been promised

We come this morning

longing for the desert of wilderness

we know in this world and in our lives

to be transformed into pools of water

We come longing for peace in a miraculous time

of increasing signs and wonders of peace.

We come asking again for your strength and wisdom;

for as we have cried to you for peace,

we beseech you now:

guide us in our work of nurturing and supporting

the new democratic peoples in their infancy throughout

this world

As we make this Advent journey

we confess some of our longing is born of envy.

We envy the obviously bright, obviously compelling star

the Magi and the shepherds followed

Even as we claim outward signs of hope

and gratefully prepare for Christ's advent,

some of us struggle inwardly with Gethsemanes of

betrayal, loneliness, and

brokenness in our relationships with family,

neighbor, and community

Clothe us in compassion, that we might forgive ourselves

and others as you have forgiven us,

restoring relationship, repairing

As we pray for the hungry, the ill, the grieving,

We ask for strength to respond to them and their needs

With bread, not stone

We wait, O generous God,

we wait anxiously

to cradle the babe, the child of Mary

O come, Emmanuel, come
