New Phillips CPE Program Awards First Certificates

Phillips Theological Seminary awarded the first four certificates for students in its new clinical pastoral education (CPE) program. The course engages students in critical reflection in order to gain greater self-awareness, ministerial identity and effective ministry skills.

The four students receiving the certificates were:

  • Kara Farrow
  • Jamie Gray
  • Yadenee Hailu
  • Daniel Wood.

“It completely transformed the way I think about and do ministry,” Farrow said.

She said the parish-based CPE program made it possible for her to fulfill an ordination requirement in her denomination while also using her training every day in her congregation, Fellowship Lutheran Church in Tulsa, Okla.

The Phillips program, a satellite center of Presbyterian Health Services in Albuquerque, N.M., is an extended parish/community based course intended to meet the standard requirements for one unit of certified ACPE approved training. ACPE is the is the premier, Dept. of Education-recognized organization that provides the highest quality CPE programs for spiritual care professionals of any faith and in any setting.

Jeff Hoppe, director of chaplaincy services at Presbyterian Healthcare Services, says CPE is a transformational experience for students.

“It will also benefit those who these folks will serve as they go along in their ministry,” Hoppe said.
