Leaving a Legacy, Honoring Family Commitments
The Doran F. and M. Jean Myers Scholarship
Donor: The Rev. Doran F. and M. Jean Myers
Doran and Jean, lifelong members of Disciples of Christ churches, met at Phillips University. A seminary alumnus, he was ordained in 1945 and served churches in Oklahoma, Kansas, and Nebraska. Jean was a driving force in those three states in the Christian Women's Fellowship and Church Women United.
Ruth Moore, daughter of the Myers, shared the following…
"Our parents complemented each other so well. They were such a good match in ministry.
My father’s best assets were that he was a peacemaker, very gentle, quiet, and unassuming. Those are invaluable qualities when you want to minister. He was generous, but had an innate ability to be in a room resolving conflict. He had a tremendous love of the earth, of animals, of nature. He was in every way a family man.
My mother was a force. She was marvelous. If she thought she needed to provide leadership she would step forward, she loved a challenge. She was on the Church Finance Council and was honored at Quadrennial as a distinguished leader.
We were all thrilled when my parents established this scholarship. The scholarship gives me and my siblings a place to honor them on their birthdays and on their anniversary."
Ruth’s sister, Kathryn Brown, added: “I thought it was awesome because it just carries on what our parents believed, that education is so important for clergy and congregations. This scholarship was an extension of their whole DNA."
