On the Passing of Donna Killen, Board of Trustees Member

The Phillips Theological Seminary community is mourning the passing of Donna Killen, longtime Board of Trustees member and benefactor of the institution.

Donna’s involvement with Phillips started in the early 1990s. She and her husband, Dave Killen, owned property in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado where they established A Mountain Retreat which provided retreats for the renewal of ministers, their lives and callings.

Phillips offered a cohort of its Doctor of Ministry program with specialization classes held at the retreat center where Donna provided all the hospitality, including cooking first-class, sit-down meals for everyone.

She became a trustee for the seminary in 1993, serving a total of 22 years, and was a tireless promoter of Phillips in the Central Rocky Mountain Region of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and in her home congregation of Evergreen Christian Church.

The Donna Killen Endowed Scholarship at Phillips Theological Seminary and many other substantial annual gifts were given to Phillips over two decades of generosity by Donna and her husband Dave.

“May we remember the support that Donna Killen always offered this school and its community,” said Interim President Nancy Claire Pittman in a note to the seminary’s staff and faculty. “May we be grateful for her life among us, and may we do our jobs well—knowing that she and so many people have encouraged and nurtured our best.”

President Emeritus Gary Pelsuo-Verdend said, "For the last quarter century, Donna guided the seminary’s direction and invested in its future through sharing her work, wisdom, and wealth. She was a friend to Phillips and to everyone with whom she worked.”

Killen died Sunday, Aug. 19 in Denver, Colo. following a brief medical emergency. A date for a memorial celebration has not been set.
