Coupling an evangelistic agenda with a national distribution system and, as the 19th century progressed, with a (sometimes very explicit) racial agenda, images of Jesus multiplied. Jesus went from shrouded in white to being very white, Caucasian, Northern European.

Phillips Seminary President Gary Peluso-Verdend juxtaposes two broad versions, composite sketches, of Christian-informed visions for what the U.S. should be. He thinks you’ll see how the visions also express competing judgments about where the U.S. is and needs to go.

The situation in the classroom and in a seminary, even a small one such as Phillips is, has gotten complex to the point that I’m not sure the concept of safe space will hold much longer. We don’t seem to be able to juggle the competing needs.
Phillips Theological Seminary offers Christian graduate theological education
in service of intelligent, just, and compassionate religious and civic communities. We welcome
students to a safe space for truth-seeking conversations about the Bible, Jesus, and faithful living.
Courses available on campus and online for certificate, diploma, MDiv, MAMC, MASJ, & MTS
programs, and on campus for the DMin program.
