PTS Seeks Part-time Technologists:

Do you know something about computers, cameras, and other technological gizmos that help PTS reach remote learners?  Would you like to work 10-24 hours a week to bring in some extra money?  Then watch for the job description soon to be posted on the Employment page of the PTS website.

The purpose of an educational technologist at PTS is to support the seminary’s teaching and speaking mission both on campus and online.

Summer Policy Institute for Students, August 5-7, 2013:

Oklahoma Policy Institute will host the first Summer Policy Institute (SPI) from August 5 -7, 2013 at the University of Tulsa. The event will bring together 40-50 highly-qualified undergraduate and graduate students for an exciting and stimulating three-day learning experience. SPI will offer participants a unique opportunity to become better informed about vital Oklahoma policy issues, network with fellow students and leaders in the policy process, and prepare for their future studies and work in policy-related fields.

The Institute will be hosted and led by the staff of OK Policy, a Tulsa-based think-tank that produces timely and credible information, analysis, and ideas on state policy issues, guided by core commitments to the fair and adequate funding of public services and the expansion of economic prosperity for all Oklahomans.

David Blatt, of OK Policy, was a speaker at the 2013 PTS ReMind & ReNew event.

The application deadline is June 7, 2013.

From Your Director of Recruitment

Hey, friends of PTS! Well things are gearing up around Phillips Theological Seminary for the Board of Trustees meeting and Commencement this weekend. It’s my first time to be on this side of it all and it’s a bit overwhelming. Because the business of the school is on the mind of many around campus, I’m naturally hearing a lot about the need for recruitment to increase enrollment. As Director of Recruitment these conversations sort of catch my attention (along with that squirrel…). Um, Sorry. Really, it’s no secret that our enrollment needs to reflect some better numbers.

That means a big part of my job is to keep this reality before you. I can’t, on my own, connect to as many people (prospective students) as we all can together. I’m pushing as much as I can, don’t get me wrong. Still, I’m one person. That’s why from this point on you all are ordained as Assistants to the Director of Recruitment or Recruitment Assistants or Volunteer Phillips Recruiting Agents or, erm, whatever you want your title to be; nonetheless, it’s going to involve you someway, somehow in conversation with prospective (think broadly here) students saying, “Ahem, ya know, there’s this cool place on 901 N. Mingo in Tulsa…”

So, as I said last week, I’m headed to Springfield, MO this Sunday. I’ll be there hanging out before I have a meeting with the Chaplain at Drury University on Monday. If you or anyone you know is in town and wants to talk theological education and/or recruitment then give me a call at 918-270-6463 or send me an email at josh.linton@ptstulsa.edu or hit me up on Twitter @jalinton.

Here are a few more items on the upcoming schedule: Tuesday the 28th I’ll be in Oklahoma City at the Oklahoma UMC Annual Conference Phillips Alumni/ae dinner. And at the end of that week (29-31) I will be attending the John Hope Franklin Symposium in Tulsa. Yep, there is a lot of work to do, but we’re going to get it done and have a lot of fun in the process.

Summer Reading:

A student who is an avid library user and had just turned in her last paper mused: “What do you have here that would be fun for summer?” A certain lingering intensity accompanied her – she has not yet come down from the end of the semester. She began to look over the New Books table, and I also began to switch from intense assistance mode to a more relaxed mode of librarianship. The emotional gulf between the “just for fun” library user and the “gotta get the paper done” library user is profound, and particularly interesting when both of those users are seen in one person. The love of what our library user has for both modes of reading represents different kinds of love of learning ranging from determination to downright lust. The library is open all summer to satisfy both grimly determined and exuberantly lustful reading and learning demands of our library. Here are our hours, and I hope to see you!

Celebrating Graduation:

The campus is abuzz this week with all sorts of graduation-related festivities.  The Senior Banquet is this evening; commencement is tomorrow morning.  The Board of Trustees is on hand to join in the fun, as well as accomplishing some significant work.   This week's homilies on the Pentecost lection include words of challenge and encouragement: Joe Bessler's homily and Gary Peluso-Verdend's homily.

I can think of no better way to honor the students who have worked so hard and overcome so many challenges to complete their programs this academic year than simply to call them by name and conclude with a prayer, written by PTS President Gary Peluso-Verdend.

God of days and nights, of road and home, of learning and loving, of Tulsa-space and cyberspace, of gaining and losing:

I come to the homestretch of another race. My legs are weary. My lungs burn. I dig deep.

Holy Fire, fuel me.

I’ve read more than I can absorb, written more than I’ve crafted, replied more than I’ve thought.

Holy Fire, fuel me.

I’ve questioned and been questioned. A few more answers would be nice.

Holy Fire, fuel me.

Stop the world, I want a rest. Actually, don’t stop the world—I’d settle for a good night’s sleep.

Holy Fire, fuel me.

I’ll miss my friends and classmates. I’ll miss the experience of being re-minded—sometimes. But I’m grateful to pass this marker on my journey.

Holy Fire, fuel me.

Holy Fire, fuel me with grace. An extra log on the fire today, please, for all the members of the PTS community.

Amen.

I echo Gary’s prayer for today, tomorrow and all the days ahead, as we send one another out with joy and passion to do the transformative work that God calls us to do!

Grace and peace,

Susanna
