In my five years at PTS, I have watched the names of graduating seniors gradually shift from completely unfamiliar to mixed to completely familiar. This year I'm pleased to say that I have taught nearly all of these students in at least once class. I don't have to know someone personally in order to celebrate the successful completion of a seminary degree; however, I relish the opportunity to see the transformation from newbie (filled with hopes and fears for an unknown journey ahead) to seasoned student/scholar/minister (filled with a new set of hopes and fears for another journey).
On a less personal note, this year I look at the names of graduating seniors and see a member of the very first online ITEM class. This marks a significant moment in the history of PTS, as students for whom the expanded online program makes seminary possible begin to complete their degrees. Yes, it can be done!
In the meantime, PTS continues to explore ways of building community that transcends walls. During courses this summer, when students from a distance come to campus to fulfill residency requirements, we will serve lunches in the Student Commons, hold weekly worship services, offer Moodle Q&A sessions, and generally promote relationship-building among students and faculty. Katrina will send out Connecting Community, which has historically taken a summer hiatus. We want everyone who is a part of the PTS community to feel like a part of the seminary community.
And, as you know, once you become a member of the PTS community, you remain a member of the PTS community for life. At commencement on Saturday, May 12th, we watched one stage of a journey come to an end while the next stage began for twenty-four students.
Congratulations to our December 2011 and May 2012 graduates and brand new alums!
