Commencement Invocation 2010

Chaplain Susanna Southard celebrates God's transforming work in us and in the world in this prayer of invocation.

O God of endings and beginnings,

O God who transforms endings into beginnings,

O God who sees us as we are

and as we are yet to become,

We enter your presence with great joy this day

This commencement day

To celebrate endings and beginnings.

We offer you every scribbled note and hurried keystroke

Every digested and undigested reading assignment

Every creative and compelling and, yes, rebellious thought

Every deeply troubling conversation

Every timely word of comfort and hope

Every sacred element that has defined seminary life

As a transforming experience for those who graduate today.

We thank you for your grace-filled voice

That first called us together and soon calls us apart

In this moment, challenge us and inspire us.

Remind us that this celebration

This ending known as graduation

Is at the same time a new beginning

For you are not finished with us yet

And you will not let us rest

Until this world truly reflects your vision

Of what and who we can be

And so, we offer ourselves in this gathering at this time

To your transforming love

In Christ's name.
