A Student's Perspective of General Assembly

Going to General Assembly was an amazing experience in many ways. Particularly, I met people this General Assembly that I might never have met because I had the privilege of interviewing people, asking simple yet complicated questions like, “What is the church called to do?” and “Where is God at work in the church and in the world?” People told stories of hope, calling, and care. Even more importantly, we shared hugs, smiles, and joy.

I approached one pastor, and asked to interview him. He replied that he would be more than glad to do so. When he asked why I was doing the interview, I explained that it would be for Phillips. He responded by saying that he had already been interviewed, but asked if he could interview me instead. I was surprised but agreed. He told me that his church had some money that they had planned to give away to various ministries and that Phillips was on that list! This pastor wanted to be able to share how a seminary education changes a person’s life. I was able to share that because of a scholarship I have received, I feel freer to pursue the calling of starting a new church. He taped my story and is taking that back to his congregation. I was excited to know that his congregation would be able to connect giving to a seminary with students being able to actively pursue their calling while obtaining an amazing seminary education and all the wonderful experiences that go with that. After all seminary is about the books, but it is also about the relationships and experiences that bring it all context and meaning. For all of that, I give thanks.
