A Heartfelt Congratulations

Every spring, I face a dilemma. I want to offer my personal congratulations to all PTS students and graduates who are being approved for ordination or commissioning.

These are passionate individuals who meet with their denominational committees and boards—sometimes a harrowing experience—and, if all goes well, emerge with an affirmation of their calling to ordained ministry. Although the seminary does not have a say in ordination decisions, we do have an investment in our students and in the vocation of ministry which comes in many forms.

Here's where denominational differences come in. In many traditions, individuals are ordained one at a time in a local church in the course of a custom-designed service of worship. Personal invitations are sent. In my tradition, United Methodist, individuals are ordained in community at special ordination/commissioning services at Annual Conference sessions. For the most part, invitations are assumed. Commissioning comes first, followed by ordination after a probationary period of full-time ministry. It's not easy to keep track of who is being ordained when by what Annual Conference. And because I cannot name everyone, I hesitate to congratulate anyone in an official way.

So today I simply explain my dilemma and extend my heartfelt congratulations to all of you! Please personalize this by adding your name (or the names of people you know) as a comment on the Facebook link. Oh, and if you send me an email or drop by my office, I'll celebrate with you one on one.
