Religion Communicators Council Honors Seminary's Marketing Efforts

Phillips Theological Seminary was honored March 30 by the national Religious Communicators Council (RCC) for its 2016 “Love Thy ______ Neighbor” marketing campaign.

The seminary received an award of excellence (the top honor) in the category of Advertising Campaign for its “Love Thy ______ Neighbor” television, billboard, and public awareness series. A merit award was given for the “Love Thy ______ Neighbor” television commercial that aired on KOTV and KQCW in Tulsa, Okla.

The annual DeRose-Hinkhouse Memorial Awards are given to active members of RCC who demonstrate excellence in religious communication and public relations. The 2017 awards ceremony was at the Crowne Plaza Chicago O'Hare.

Kurt GwartneyKurt Gwartney, senior director of seminary relations at Phillips, is a member of RCC’s Dallas-Ft. Worth chapter, and he was also elected to the organization’s national board of governors at the 2017 meeting.

“It’s such an honor to be asked to serve on the national board by my colleagues from across the U.S.,” Gwartney said. “With more than 400 members, the council is a great resource for anyone involved in religious communications and public relations.”

The council was established in 1929 and is the oldest public relations professional organization in the United States.

This year RCC received 231 DeRose-Hinkhouse contest entries. Each entry was judged on overall quality, including concept, writing, design, creativity, style, use of color, appropriateness of material for intended audience, creative use of resources, and effectiveness in achieving its purpose.

This year’s panel of judges included faculty members from Chicago’s Roosevelt University, Evanston’s Northwestern University, and New York’s St. John’s University, as well as individual communications professionals from both secular and religious organizations.
