Phillips Theological Seminary Awards 17 Diplomas and Honorary Degree

Phillips Theological Seminary awarded 17 diplomas at its commencement May 14 at First Christian Church in Tulsa, Okla. The seminary also honored Marion Cornelious Potter with an Honorary Doctor of Divinity.

There were 13 Master of Divinity graduates and one each for a Graduate Diploma in Theological Studies, Master of Arts in Ministry and Culture, Master of Theological Studies, and Doctor of Ministry.

Potter’s honorary degree was conferred for his 37 years of service to the congregation of Antioch Baptist Church and his record of work and leadership in the Tulsa community, and beyond.

“Your theological commitment to love all God’s people, regardless of religious tradition, is admirable and truly exemplifies the ecumenical spirit. Your success in congregational leadership and your powerful example of how to connect faith to public life are significant accomplishments,” reads the citation for Potter’s honor.

Joseph A. Bessler, PhD, and Associate Dean for Faculty Development and Assessment and Robert Travis Peake Professor of Theology, delivered the faculty reflection. MDiv graduate Amy Lynn Grogan provided the Senior Class Reflection.

The Phillips Seminary Choir, under the direction of student Joshua Bell, provided a special musical offering accompanied by Paul M. Pinkosky, organist/music director at First Christian Church.
